911 Porsche Technical Development:

Biggest problems stemmed from the definition of the body. At the end of '61 Butz Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, designed the prototype 695, based on the new mechanics. The 695, which had 4 seats, was ugly and ungainly, but contained many physical features of the future Porsche 911.

A long process of refinement led to the presentation at the IAA in Frankfurt of 1963, the prototype 901, which would become the 911 final.

The prototype 901 was a static model, without engine, because the delay on the design of the body had made impossible the final tests. The design of the car is not met, initially, critical acclaim and the "purists" Porsche.

The launch took place so only in 1964 under the name 911. The name was changed to avoid problems with the Peugeot, which traditionally used three-digit identification with the central zero.

The 911 was a coupe 2 +2 (refinements have reduced the space back), engine rear overhang, rear-wheel drive, Suspension 4- wheel independent with torsion bars, 4 disc brakes and manual transmission 4-speed. The 6-cylinder air-cooled and powered by 3 carburetor Solex that the move had a displacement of 1991cc and a maximum power of 130hp.

In 1966 was also launched 'S 911', thanks to a series of changes to ' shaft, profile of pistons, valves increased), reached a power of 160cv. All models are passed to carburetors Weber. Externally, the S is acknowledged for the alloy wheels Fuchs.

993 Porsche Historical Overview

The Porsche 993 (911) was superseded by the 996 in late 1998, the production of the 993 was between 1993 and early 1998; actual models are 1994 through to 1998. The number 993 refers to the company's internal name for this particular version of the 911.

As is the case with all 911 models, there were several different styles of the 993. The various trims differed in driver train, body style, and equipment. The 993 was eventually replaced by the 996.

The Porsche 993 Trims

In all there were 11 different variants of the 933 that were manufactured, they are as follows:

The Porsche 993 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet, the 993 Targa, Porsche Turbo, Turbo S,Turbo Cabriolet, Carrera S and Carrera 4S, Carrera RS Club-sport, GT2, and the Speedster.

The Porsche 993 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet

The 993 Carrera was the base model of all the 993 trims, the car was equipped with a 3.6 liter engine, and was available in rear wheel and all wheel drives.

The options for Carrera 993 was numerous; they included different seat styles, several different wheel styles, various suspension set ups, innumerable upholstery options and the possibility to have various digital sounds processing mechanism installed.

993 Porsche Targa

The Targa model year was 1996 and it had something from its predecessors; a retractable glass roof. The roof would retract beneath the rear window, thus revealing a large open roof. The roof was shaded to prevent the greenhouse effect from happening when the roof was closed. In terms of body style, the Targa basically has the same body style of the convertible except for the glass roof.

933 Porsche Turbo

The 993 Turbo hit the road in 1995, and it was the first Porsche Turbo to be featured with all wheel drive. The vehicle had a new turbocharged engine displacing 3.6 liters. It also came with twin turbo-chargers and air to air inter-coolers, new redesigned cylinder heads, electronic engine management system, and other modifications.

The body style of the Turbo differs by a wide margin from the Carrera; it came with wider rear wheel arches, redesigned rear and front bumper moldings, and an affixed rear wing that housed the inter-coolers. It also brandished new 18 inches alloy wheels with weight reducing hollow spokes that were standard.

Another notable distinction of the 993 Turbo is that it was one of the first production vehicles to have OBDII diagnostics (On-Board Diagnostics, or OBD; in respect to automotive, it refers to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting ability. The system gives the vehicle owner and or repair personnel the ability to access the car state, specifically with regards to its health, by revealing information for the vehicle sub-systems.)

The Porsche 993 Turbo reached a milestone in being the fastest production car in the world at the time of its production. It reached 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds.

993 Porsche Turbo S

The Turbo S was released in 1997 and a total of about 183 cars were eventually sold. The Turbo S was upgraded to 424 hp or 450 hp depending on which market you are in. It was lighter than the 993 Turbo, due mainly to the carbon fiber decoration in its interior. The S model also had a slightly larger rear wing relative to its sibling the 993 Turbo.

Production of the Porsche Turbo began in 1974. The new model was called the Porsche 930, and it was produced from 1974 through to 1989, and was thus the new top model from Porsche.

The 2 door sports car was renowned for its power and handle, like all Porsche vehicles, it came with a rear engine, and it featured a distinctive design, and came with independent rear suspension.

The production of the 911 Turbo did not stop with the 930 Turbo. In fact, every 911 series had a Turbo model.

On this page we have listed the respective turbo models as they relate their corresponding series.

As was mentioned above, the first turbo to it the road was the 930, followed by the 964 Turbo, then the 993 Turbo, which was replaced by the 996 Turbo, and then 997 Turbo.

Porsche Turbo Nomenclature:

930 Porsche Turbo 911 (Production 1974 to 1989)

In 1974 Porsche built the first turbocharger, and it was called the 930.

The new sports car with the internal development number 930 was presented as a Porsche 911 Turbo. At the Paris Motor Show, Porsche introduced it to world as the first production sports car with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator.

964 Porsche Turbo 911 (Production 1990 to 1994)

In 1990 Porsche introduced a Turbo version of the 964 series. This car is sometimes mistakenly called 965 (this type number actually referred to a stillborn project that would have been a hi-tech turbocharged car in the vein of the 959).

For the 1991 and 1992 model years, Porsche produced the 964 Turbo with the 930's proven 3.3 L engine, improved to produce 320 PS (235 kW).

1993 brought the Carrera 2/4's 3.6 L engine, now in turbo-charged form and sending a staggering 360 PS (265 kW) to the rear wheels. With the 993 on the way, this car was produced through 1994 and remains rather rare.

993 Porsche Turbo 911 (Production 1995 to 1998)

The 993 Turbo is the top model in the Porsche 993 series and it was launched in 1995.

Unlike its predecessor, the series 964, the 993 Turbo have two turbochargers with inter-cooler. By using two small instead of one large turbocharger the car has a faster response time and a smoother power curve can also be achieved.

The Porsche 993 Turbo was produced in the following quantities: 2,484 pieces per model year 1996, 1775 vehicles (plus 182 vehicles of the type Turbo S) in model year 1997, 556 vehicles (plus 160 vehicles of the type Turbo S) in model year 1998.

996 Porsche Turbo 911 (Production 2000 to 2004)

In 2000, Porsche launched the Turbo version of the Type 996. Like the GT3, the new Turbo engine derived from the 911 GT1 engine and, like its predecessor, featured twin-turbos and now developed 420 PS[16] (309 kW).

Also like its predecessor the new Turbo was only available with all wheel drive. A US$17,000 factory option, the X50 package, was available that boosted the engine output to 450 PS (331 kW) with 620 N·m (457 ft·lbff) of torque across a wide section of the power band.

With the X50 package in place the car could make 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 3.8 seconds. This package is named as Turbo S in Europe.

Later on toward the end of the 996 life cycle, a 996 Turbo S coupe also returned to the US along with a new debut of the Turbo S Cabriolet boasting even more power— 450 PS (331 kW) and 620 N·m (457 ft·lbff)— than the regular Turbo. The Turbo can reach a top speed of 189 mph (304 km/h).[16]

997 Porsche Turbo 911 (Production 2005 to Now)

The Turbo version of the 997 series featured the same 3.6 L twin-turbocharged engine as the 996 Turbo, but this time it developed 480 PS (353 kW; 473 bhp) and 620 N·m (457 lb·ft) of torque.

This was in part due to the 997's VTG (variable turbine geometry), which essentially combines the low-rev boost and quick responses of a small turbocharger with the high-rev power of a larger turbocharger. As well as producing more power and flexibility, the new turbocharger improved fuel consumption over the 996 Turbo.

With these performance upgrades, it accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds (with the manual transmission) and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h (193 mph). However, these are official figures and Porsche is notable for being conservative about their power and performance ratings.

Motor Trend Magazine has clocked the 997 Turbo's 0–60 mph time in 3.2 seconds with the Tiptronic transmission. Jeremy Clarkson on his "Thriller" dvd, showed that on a de-restricted stretch of autobahn with just the right downwards gradient, the car maxed out 200 mph (320 km/h).

The optional Sports Chrono overboost package increases torque to 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) for short periods (maximum 10 seconds) but over a narrower rev range.

964 Porsche: In 1989 Porsche introduced the 964, (pronounced Nine Sixty 4) the number 964 refers to the company's internal name for the new version of the Porsche 911 model. It was manufactured and distributed in between 1989 and 1994; actual models are from 1990 through to 1994.

930 Engine and Development:

In 1978, the performance of the turbo was rose to 221 kW (300 HP). This was achieved primarily through a further increase in displacement to 3.3 liters and now in particular the installation of a charge air cooler.

The 996 Porsche (911) was replaced by the 997, the production of the 996 was between 1998 and 2005; actual models are 1999 through to 2005. The number 996 refers to the company's internal name for this particular version of the 911.

The 996 at its debut had the most major changes made to any Carrera model since the 911 was first introduced in 1963. These most significant changes included body style, engine.

Fuel Economy: The 2003 911 Carrera Cabriolet, Carrera Coupe and Targa offer 18 mph in the city and 26 mph on the highway. While the 911 Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera 4S Coupe offer 17 mph in the city and 23 - 24 mph on the highway. And the Turbo and GT2 spit out 15 mph in the city and 22 mph on the highway.

Comfort & Convenience: Air Conditioning, Cruise Control (except for the GT2), Tachometer, Leather Steering Wheel, Telescopic Steering Column, Trip Computer, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Driver Multi-Adjustable Power Seats (except for the GT2), Leather Seats and Second Row Folding Seat (except for the GT2). Sunroof is standard with all models except for the Cabriolets and the GT2.

Entertainment: Radio, Cassette Player and CD player.
Safety: Driver and Passenger airbags are standard on all models; Front Side Airbag with Head Protection also comes standard. Power Door Locks, ABS Brakes and Trunk Anti-Trap Device come standard with all 2003 models.

Traction Control is standard only with the Turbo, and Stability Control is standard with the Carrera 4 Cabriolet, Turbo and Carrera 4S.
